BACKWATERS OF KERALA
KERALA the land of coconut and
kathakali, is a strip of green canopied land on the southern part of
peninsular India bordered by the Arabian Sea on the western side and
mountainous peaks on the eastern side.
National geographic society publication has listed Kerala as one of
the '50 greatest places of a life time'. Exceptionally different
from the rest of India it has developed attributes, which are
exceptionally unique and are compared to the most advanced nations
in the west in the field of literacy
The real India still lives in the
villages. The best way to experience which is to travel out into the
countryside one means or the other. Though most of coastal Kerala
the sea made deep inroads, often penetrating many miles island.
These backwaters run through the countryside as deep or shallow
channels or canals, some even being interconnected. While nearer the
sea most of these are brackish, deeper inland, when often
intercepted by fresh water lakes, they carry sweet potable water.
From the earliest times a boat (ketuvallam) has been the means of
communication, which ranges in size from a one-persona carrier to
those for scores of people, from rustic open goods transporters to
artistically built, roofed live-in type.
